Parasaurolophus is a large North American dinosaur. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

Parasaurolophus (Near Crested lizard) was a member of the hadrosaur family, a group of ornithopod dinosaurs that could move bipedally or quadrupedally and could be identified by their broad snout, which gives the group the nickname "duck-billed dinosaurs". Like many other hadrosaurs, Parasaurolophus had a distinctive crest on top of its head, which was long, tube-like and projected off the back of its skull. The crest is believed to have a variety of functions, including thermoregulation and as a means of amplifying the dinosaur's calls during communication. There are three known species of Parasaurolophus, each with a distinct crest.

Parasaurolophus lived during the Late Cretaceous up until 73 million years ago, in what is now North America - remains have been found in Alberta, Canada, as well as New Mexico and Utah, USA. Potential fossils that may represent Parasaurolophus have also been found in China. Like all hadrosaurs, it was herbivorous and would have eaten a variety of plants. Its teeth were packed into "dental batteries" which consisted of hundreds of teeth, which could have allowed it to chew tough vegetation. Based on other hadrosaur studies, it is likely that Parasaurolophus lived in herds.
