“ | Latin name: Diatryma Gigantean. The gastornis is an extinct genus of flightless birds that lived during the late Paleocene and Eocene ages of the Cenozoic. Gastronis were common in Europe, but had a close relative in North America. The North American genus is often referred to as Diatryma, but experts nowadays believe that they both belong in the Gastronis genus. On average, the gastronis measured 1,75 metres tall, while Diatryma was even 2 metres tall. It had a remarkably big beak, suggesting that it was carnivorous (although the beak may simply have been used for wooing and was probably better suited for crushing food, than for tearing or cutting it). Similar but unrelated giant birds were the Phorusrhacoids of South American origin and the Dromornithidae (Genyornis) of Australia. The former were certainly carnivorous, whereas the latter may have been, but that is not for sure. The closest living relatives of Gastronis are the Rallidae family, which includes crakes and moorhens. Gastornis means 'Gaston’s Bird', named after Gaston Planté, who discovered the first fossils at Geiseltal, Germany. | ” |
